Three Cancers Expected to Increase in Men and How to Prevent Them
New figures from the UK predict that a man’s risk of developing cancer at some point during his lifetime will rise to one in two by the year 2027. Three types of cancer stand out among the rest as the most likely to rise in the next 15 years. Thankfully, these three can be made less likely with a few lifestyle changes.
Cancer Research UK says the main reason that cancer will rise in the next decade and a half is that people are living longer. But unfortunately, though we are living longer, we are not staying healthy into our senior years. Life expectancy is up significantly since 1990, but those final few years are characterized in many with chronic conditions such as diabetes, arthritis, and neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease.
Cancer risk does tend to rise as well as we get older. Among men, the three cancers that are predicted to rise over the next fifteen years are prostate cancer, bowel cancer and melanoma.
Prostate cancer is cancer that starts in the prostate gland, a part of the reproductive system. This type of cancer is the most common cause of death from cancer in men over the age of 75. It is rarely found in men younger than 40. Over the last 40 years prostate cancer incidence rates in Great Britain have tripled say the authors of the study.
Those at greater risk for prostate cancer are African-American men, men with a family history (a father or brother) with the disease, and men exposed to certain types of chemicals, such as Agent Orange and cadmium. Certain occupations also appear to increase the risk of prostate cancer, such as farming, painting, and tire plant workers.
Certain dietary choices may reduce the risk of developing prostate cancer. To lower your risk, try adopting the following advice:
• Increase intake of omega-3 fatty acids by increasing fish intake.
• Reduce intake of meat, particularly that which is fried.
• A vegetarian diet has been shown to reduce the risk of aggressive forms of disease
• Eat more curry or other foods with curcumin, which may help slow the growth of prostate cancer cells
• Oregano is another herb associated with fighting prostate cancer
• .Daily exercise is also beneficial for preventing many types of cancer, including prostate cancer.
Bowel cancer, also known as colorectal cancer, is a cancer from uncontrolled cell growth in the large intestine and is the third most common cancer in the world. Age is a factor for this type of cancer as well, with most cases found in patients older than fifty. Genetics plays a role, but most colorectal cancer cases appear to be strongly linked to lifestyle choices.
Factors associated with increasing the risk of colorectal cancer include having a diet high in red or processed meats or meats cooked at high temperatures, being overweight (especially with excess fat around the waist), exercising too little, and smoking or drinking alcohol. Including plenty of antioxidants and fiber in the diet through intake of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains may help reduce the risk as well.
