Gmelina arborea bark extract antidiabetic properties confirmed, according to animal studies

Gmelina arborea bark extract is antidiabetic and non- toxic, according to recent findings from the Department of Biotechnology in India (DBI).

But not only that, this research by the DBI, has also proven that Gmelina arborea bark extract changes the levels of diabetic markers in the blood, such as: HbA1c, Glucose, Urea, Creatinine, Protein, Albumin, Globulin, SGOT, SGPT and ALP. This was observed after 21 days of experiment, in which diabetic rats were given 100 mg of leaf powder, dissolved in 1000 ml of water.

Another study on the antidiabetic activity of Gmelina arborea bark extract, suggested that the levels of sugar in the blood could be altered after a single and subacute oral administration. But, the more definite results were found in the end of the 28 day experiment, as It was observed that Gmelina arborea bark extract, did not decrease the plasma glucose level in the non- diabetic rats (control group). However, after oral administration of the aqueous extract, the plasma glucose level was significantly decreased in the diabetic rats.

There are two ways in which gmelina bark extract exerts its antidiabetic activities

1) It regenerates cells related to the diagnosis of diabetes

It is well known that B- cells have a role in the pathogenesis of diabetes. For example: type 1 diabetes is an organ-specific autoimmune disease, in which the pancreatic β-cells that produce insulin are the target of immune attack. Then, there is a progressive loss of β-cells and when sufficient numbers of these cells have been destroyed, or their function inhibited, diabetes occurs.

The way which Gmelina bark extract has beneficial effects against diabetes, is through upregulating the β-cell regeneration and biosynthesis of insulin. This was discovered by an experiment on diabetic rats, which were given 1.00 g/kg of gmelina bark extract for 30 days. It was observed that the plant extract treated group, showed a regenerative effect on β-cells of the pancreas in diabetic rats.

2) It increases the blood glutathione (GSH) levels

Diabetes is associated with decreased cellular glutathione concentrations. But, Gmelina arborea bark extract has been shown to increase blood GSH levels, reinforcing the role of GSH as a free radical scavenger and in the repair of free radical caused biological damage.
