A new study by researchers at the University of Aberdeen shows that finding a new exercise companion increased the amount of exercise people did.

Daily exercise is essential to good health in body and mind. It appears that having a good exercise companion is very helpful in encouraging you to get more exercise.

Getting a new exercise buddy is a vital key to getting more exercise

The University of Aberdeen reports if you want a new body try getting a new exercise buddy. Researchers have found that getting a new buddy to exercise with is a vital key to getting more exercise.

The researchers have reported that finding a new exercise partner increased the amount of exercise which people did. If the new exercise buddy was emotionally supportive the amount of exercise increased even more. This is the first study which has investigated the benefits which are associated with having a new exercise buddy.

Dr Pamela Rackow from the Institute of Applied Health Sciences at the University of Aberdeen said it was the idea of this study to determine in a very natural setting what is actually occurring when two people get together with the goal to get more exercise. This study is seen as being unique because it reflects natural life relatively well because when you make a decision to exercise with a friend you generally seek out someone who is in your normal social network.

People exercised more when their exercise buddy offered emotional support

It was observed that people exercised more when their exercise buddy offered emotional support along with encouragement. It appears to be more important to encourage each other to exercise rather than simply planning to get together to exercise. Clearly there is a powerful effect of positive psychology associated with emotional support.

This study is published in the British Journal of Health Psychology. It seems to be beneficial to actively search for a new exercise buddy and to exercise together. Emotional support from the new exercise partner can have even more dramatic positive effects. A benefit from more exercise is generally better health in body and mind.
