Researchers have found a compound from chicory offers a possible treatment strategy for neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative disorders are devastating conditions which slowly rob people of their memory. Researchers are constantly searching for natural remedies to help treat these disorders.

In studies with mice scientists have shown that a component of chicory which is known as chicoric acid may help decrease impairment of memory which is associated with Alzheimer's disease, and possibly also other neurodegenerative diseases.

Chicoric acid is a nutraceutical component of chicory. It also is found in Echinacea purpurea, dandelion, lettuce, and other plants and vegetables which are edible. Xuebo Liu, Ph.D., who is a researcher associated with the work at the College of Food Science and Engineering, Northwest A&F University, in Yangling, China, has said research shows chicoric acid supplementation might offer a viable therapeutic intervention for neuroinflammation associated diseases such as Alzheimer's disease.

Liu and his colleagues did their research on mice. There was a control group, a group of mice that were given lipopolysaccharide (LPS), and another group that was given both LPS and chicoric acid. A Y maze and a Morris water maze behavioral tests were used to evaluate learning and memory capabilities of the mice.

It was observed LPS-treated mice took a longer time to find the platform in comparison to the control group. However supplementation with chicoric acid markedly lowered the escape latency. When the hidden platform was removed the mice which were stimulated by LPS swam across the entire pool and they spent less time in the target quadrant,
with less platform crossings. The mice which were treated with chicoric acid and LPS demonstrated a significant increase in the average time which they spent in the target quadrant, with a greater number of crossings of the platform.

Thoru Pederson, Ph.D., who is Editor-in-Chief of The FASEB Journal, says these are provocative findings. Pederson says it is possible chicoric acid could turn out to be a beneficial human nutraceutical in dealing with overall memory acuity.

Chicoric acid has been noted as being a nutraceutical which has powerful antioxidant and antiobesity functions. Researchers have now found via behavioral tests and histological examination chicoric acid prevented LPS-induced memory impairment and neuronal loss. This component of chicory might actually serve as therapeutic intervention for neuroinflammation associated diseases such as Alzheimer's disease. This offers hope in dealing with the memory loss associated with these diseases.
