HPV Vaccine Protects Women Against Cervical Cancer

For the second year, Toronto Public Health is offering the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, free of charge, to protect young women against cervical cancer. HPV is a common virus that can cause cancer of the cervix and genital warts.

The vaccine will be administered to Grade 8 girls at school-based vaccination clinics beginning September 17. Three doses of the vaccine are required for protection. Girls who are starting Grade 9 and missed their second or third dose of the HPV vaccine can still get vaccinated at a Toronto Public Health catch-up clinic.

The programme to immunise girls against the Humanpapillomavirus (HPV) which can cause cervical cancer was officially launched today.

Starting this month, the vaccine which protects against the two strains of the virus that cause around 70% of cervical cancer cases will be routinely offered to girls aged 12-13 in schools across Northern Ireland.

The cost-effectiveness of vaccination in the United States against human papillomavirus (HPV), a sexually-transmitted virus that causes cervical cancer, will be optimized by achieving universal vaccine coverage in young adolescent girls, by targeting initial "catch-up" efforts to vaccinate women younger than 21 years of age, and by revising current screening policies, according to an analysis by Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) researchers in the August 21, 2008 issue of The New England Journal of Medicine.

Jade Goody is diagnosed with Cervical Cancer

The spokesperson of celebrity Big Brother star Jade Goody tells Reuters that Goody has been diagnosed with cervical cancer and according to AFP Goody quits India TV show after cervical cancer diagnosis.

AFP writes that "Goody apparently broke down in front of her fellow contestants on the show -- the Indian version of "Celebrity Big Brother" -- after learning of her test results, which her publicist said revealed she has cervical cancer.

"Jade's stay at the Bigg Boss house has been cut short," the Colors channel said in a statement."


Complaints Cause Gardasil Cervical Cancer Vaccine Scrutiny

Cervical cancer vaccine Gardasil is not as safe as we thought.

I woke up this morning to CNN American Morning and the breaking news that the Gardasil HPV vaccine has been implicated in deaths and various illnesses across the country.

According to the CDC, the vaccine has been the subject of almost 8,000 complaints, ranging from nausea to paralysis to death. Drug maker Merck says they have administered about 16 million vaccines in the United States.


Alberta Vaccine Program Protects Girls From Cancer

The Alberta government will be taking action to prevent the majority of cervical cancers. All girls entering grade 5 in September 2008 will be eligible to receive a vaccine that will prevent 70 per cent of cervical cancers. Grade 9 girls will also be eligible for the vaccine from September 2009 to June 2012.

Girls who are finishing Grade 8 and missed the opportunity to be vaccinated against Human Papillomavirus (HPV) during the school year can still receive the vaccine free of charge. Toronto Public Health will be holding several catch-up clinics throughout the city during the summer. HPV is a common virus that can cause cancer of the cervix and genital warts.
